Volkswagen Tukan receives engineering recognition ahead of its launch in Latin America

São Bernardo do Campo (Brazil), September 18, 2026 - It has not yet reached the streets, but it has already earned its first major engineering recognition. The Volkswagen Tukan won the 4th SAE BRASIL CarBody Trophy, a technical recognition for body engineering presented during the 10th SAE BRASIL CarBody Symposium, held on September 14 and 15 in São Paulo.

The event brings together engineers and automotive industry specialists every year to analyze and discuss body structures, materials and CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering), focusing on technical solutions applied to the development of new vehicles. In this context, the structural design of Volkswagen’s new pickup was presented by Volkswagen do Brasil Engineering executives and evaluated alongside major new developments from the automotive industry.

The recognition also comes at a special moment in Tukan’s journey. After its exterior design was fully revealed in Brazil in August, in both the entry-level single-cab version and the top-of-the-range double-cab version, the new pickup is preparing for its launch in Latin America in 2027. Before that, however, an aspect that normally remains hidden beneath the design and finishes took center stage: the engineering and quality of its body structure.

SAE BRASIL CarBody annually brings together engineers and specialists from the Body, Materials and CAE areas for a technical deep dive into the projects presented by manufacturers. Unlike recognitions based solely on the final product, the event makes it possible to analyze vehicle structures, understand engineering decisions and engage directly with the professionals responsible for their development.

Volkswagen recognized for the second consecutive year

For Volkswagen, the recognition is even more meaningful because it involves a project created to meet the specific requirements of a pickup.

“Tukan is based on the MQB architecture, one of Volkswagen’s most advanced platforms, but it was developed to meet the specific requirements of a pickup. The challenge was to combine all the technology, safety, driving dynamics and efficiency already associated with MQB with the robustness, practicality and versatility that customers expect from this type of vehicle. The recognition at SAE BRASIL CarBody is especially important because it demonstrates that we have successfully brought these qualities to the pickup world while maintaining a high standard of engineering and innovation,” says Ricardo Plöger, Vice President of Product Development at Volkswagen South America.

To transform a well-established architecture within the Volkswagen Group into a pickup with its own identity and functions, the project incorporated specific solutions from its conception. These include a leaf-spring rear suspension, developed to meet the new product’s requirements for robustness, load-carrying capability and driving dynamics.

Tukan will be produced in Paraná, Brazil, will be available in single-cab and double-cab versions, and will arrive in Latin American markets in 2027. The new pickup also represents the first concrete step in Volkswagen’s pickup offensive in Brazil and South America.

Before entering production, its development program had already exceeded 2 million kilometers of testing, including evaluations conducted with customers under real-world conditions.

Tukan’s achievement also continues Volkswagen Engineering’s recent success at SAE BRASIL CarBody. In 2025, the Volkswagen Tera won the 3rd SAE BRASIL CarBody Trophy. Now, with Tukan’s victory in the 2026 edition, Volkswagen has received this recognition for the second consecutive year with two vehicles developed in Brazil.

From Tera, developed in Brazil and now present in various Latin American markets, to Tukan, which will arrive in the region in 2027 to expand Volkswagen’s presence in the pickup segment, both projects share the same origin: engineering developed in the region and transformed into products for Latin America.
